Maarten Jan Van Strien is a Lecturer at ETH Zurich's Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, where he researches landscape ecology, spatial planning, and social-ecological systems. His work focuses on habitat connectivity, urban-rural gradients, and machine learning applications in environmental science.
He holds a Doctoral degree (2012) and Certificate in Applied Data Science (2018) from ETH Zurich and EPFL, respectively, and Master's (2007) and Bachelor's (2005) degrees in Biology from Wageningen University. His professional experience includes senior scientist roles at the Chair of Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS) since 2020.
Dr. Van Strien's research examines coupled human-natural systems through projects like EMPHASES (emergent phenomena in social-ecological systems) and CHECNET (habitat-settlement network coupling). His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on landscape connectivity modeling, urban-rural dynamics, and geospatial analysis techniques.
His articles reflect strong interdisciplinary integration, combining ecological theory with advanced computational methods including deep learning, network analysis, and agent-based modeling to address sustainability challenges in land use and conservation planning.
