Dr. Maanik Nath is an Assistant Professor of Economic History at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History, specializing in Asian economic history with a focus on South Asia during the 19th and 20th centuries. He serves as Research Coordinator for the Economic and Social History group and is a member of the PPE Board and Inequality Platform committee. His research addresses climate-agriculture linkages, financial markets, institutional change, and development determinants in the Global South.
Research affiliations include the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS), the Inequality Platform, and the PtS - Water, Climate and Future Deltas initiative. He is a consortium member of the SOCION project. Teaching responsibilities include courses on Capitalism and Colonialism (1700–2000) and Politics & History of Market Governance.
His 2024 First Monograph Prize recognized his work on Indian economic development. Publications span topics from colonial credit systems to environmental policies in tropical Asia. Current projects explore historical determinants of development through lenses of climate, finance, and institutional frameworks.
