Aaron Roberts is a PhD candidate at Utrecht University within the Department of History and Art History, Faculty of Humanities. He joined the university in autumn 2022 as part of the Sustainable Cooperation (SCOOP) project, focusing on the historical legacy of cooperative movements, particularly their transference and adaptation in colonial contexts across the Global South.
His research interests include:
- Social networks

- History, with specific focus on colonial contexts in the Global South
- Cocoa trade dynamics
Roberts conducts extensive field research in Ghana, examining cooperative cocoa production systems and the historical evolution of these institutions from colonial times to the present. His work is embedded within broader research themes including Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) and Pathways to Sustainability (PtS), contributing to interdisciplinary discussions about economic cooperation across diverse social groups.
Roberts holds a BA in Legal Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he completed a thesis on the economic value of digital privacy rights, and an MA in History from Utrecht University through the Politics and Society in Historical Perspective program. His academic journey included time at Sciences Po in Paris during undergraduate studies.
Prior to his doctoral work, Roberts gained professional experience across education, global philanthropy, shareholder advising, academic publishing, and municipal finance. This diverse background informs his interdisciplinary approach to studying how cooperative institutions have shaped economic development trajectories in post-colonial contexts.
