Michael Michalis is an Associate Professor of Ottoman History at the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cyprus. His research focuses on Ottoman Empire institutions, Cyprus under Ottoman rule, transitions to British colonialism, and post-Ottoman historiography.
Education: BA in Turkish Studies (University of Cyprus, 1996), MA in Turkology (University of Crete, 1998), PhD in Ottoman History (University of Cyprus, 2004).
Key publications include monographs on the Church of Cyprus’s political evolution and edited volumes on Ottoman Cyprus. He has contributed to journals like Archivum Ottomanicum and Chronos, focusing on archival analysis and power dynamics in the Ottoman-British transition.
Research interests emphasize Ottoman administrative systems, religious institutions' role in colonial contexts, and reinterpretations of Cypriot historiography. He has organized special journal issues on Ottoman Cyprus and Turkish historiography trends.
