Matthew S. Erie is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford's Law Faculty and an Associate Research Fellow of the Socio-Legal Studies Centre. Starting in 2025, he will join American University Washington College of Law as a tenured Associate Professor of Law. His research bridges domestic and international legal systems, focusing on ideology-driven legal interactions, particularly involving China. He leads the China, Law and Development (CLD) project, funded by an ERC Starting Grant, examining Chinese legal approaches to international law. His work spans comparative law, transnational legal studies, and the evolving global legal order.
Educated at Cornell University (Ph.D., Anthropology), University of Pennsylvania (J.D.), Tsinghua University (LL.M.), and Dartmouth College (B.A.), Erie’s interdisciplinary scholarship includes monographs like China and Islam: The Prophet, the Party, and Law (2016) and edited volumes such as Inter-Asian Law (forthcoming). He has taught law in the U.S., U.K., China, Singapore, Pakistan, and Cambodia.
His academic service includes roles as a Fellow with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and Wilson China Fellow, and as an Advisory Board Member of the International Law & Social Sciences Interest Group. He volunteers with depolarization initiatives and advises on legal and policy matters globally.
Erie’s research emphasizes China’s legal role in global reordering, including its influence on data governance, international commercial dispute resolution, and the Belt and Road Initiative. His forthcoming monograph explores Chinese law during periods of geopolitical transition. He has organized high-profile symposia and edited special issues on topics like global dispute resolution and China’s international legal engagement.
