M.J. Toswell is a Professor in the English and Writing Studies department at Western University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She has been named an inaugural Western Massey Fellow, granting her senior resident privileges at Massey College during the 2024-2025 academic year to mentor junior fellows and collaborate across disciplines.
Her research explores the pervasive influence of medievalism in Canadian society, examining conservative medievalist themes in literature, architecture, governance, and cultural practices like hockey. She is currently on sabbatical, advancing her decade-long project on Medieval Canada and drafting a book titled Navigating the Canadian University, informed by her course This University.
