Gerilyn “Lynn” Soreghan is the David L. Boren Professor and Edward L. McCollough Chair in Geosciences at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Geosciences. Her research focuses on paleoclimatology, sedimentary geology, and Earth-system interactions, particularly in the late Paleozoic. She investigates equatorial glaciation, dust and loess deposits, and weathering patterns to understand ancient climates and their implications for modern climate systems.
Teaching emphasizes field-based learning and critical thinking, with courses on Earth’s past climate, carbonate stratigraphy, and depositional systems. She mentors graduate students in sedimentology, geochemistry, and geomorphology, fostering inclusive and diverse research environments.
Her work spans global field sites, including the Rocky Mountains, Antarctica, and France, leveraging interdisciplinary methods like petrography, geochemistry, and geophysics. Key projects include reconstructing atmospheric dust fluxes, tracing glacial evidence in equatorial regions, and analyzing weathering impacts on carbon cycling.
Lynn advises numerous graduate students, many of whom have published in journals like Geology and Journal of Sedimentary Research. Her research group emphasizes ethical scientific practice and contributions to both academia and public understanding of Earth’s history.
