Ganqing Jiang is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). His research focuses on paleoenvironmental changes across critical transitions in Earth’s history, particularly utilizing field, petrographic, and geochemical approaches to study carbon isotope anomalies and oceanographic changes during the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition and Paleozoic transitions. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2002).
Dr. Jiang’s work integrates sedimentary geology and geochemistry to understand causal relationships between carbon isotope excursions, ocean redox fluctuations, and biotic innovations. His research spans Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic sedimentary archives in the Great Basin (USA) and South China. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Physical Geography, Stratigraphy, and Earth Systems Change.
Recent publications highlight studies on global cooling’s role in Mississippian biodiversity crises, Ediacaran ocean oxygenation events, and Mesoproterozoic chert deposition linked to silicification. His lab (LVIS Lab) supports research into paleoenvironmental reconstructions and biogeochemical cycles.
Dr. Jiang has advised numerous graduate students, including current PhD candidate Deborah Morales, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. His work bridges geological records with environmental and evolutionary processes, contributing to understanding Earth’s major climatic and biological transitions.
