Alan Jay Kaufman is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, affiliated with the Department of Geology in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. His research focuses on reconstructing Earth's environmental and geochemical history through isotopic analysis of ancient carbonate rocks. Key areas include Neoproterozoic (1000-544 million years ago) sedimentary successions across global locations such as Svalbard, Namibia, Canada, India, and the western USA. His work integrates carbon (C), strontium (Sr), uranium (U), and lithium (Li) isotopes to understand ocean chemistry changes, stratigraphic correlations, and the interplay of tectonic, biogeochemical, and paleoenvironmental events.
Education: Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Indiana (1990).
Research Interests: The Shuram Excursion, Ediacaran-Cambrian environmental transitions, Snowball Earth events, and the rise of atmospheric oxygen. His methodologies include SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) for high-resolution isotope analysis and interdisciplinary approaches to decode ancient ocean redox conditions and biomineralization drivers.
Labs and Facilities: Director of the Stable Isotope Laboratory at UMD, equipped for advanced geochemical analysis of carbonates and other geological materials. Collaborates globally on projects such as the Devonian-Carboniferous transition and Cretaceous ocean anoxic events.
