Lynn O’Brien Hallstein is a Professor of Rhetoric in Boston University’s College of General Studies (CGS) and serves as Assistant Provost for General Education. She oversees the BU Hub general education program, chairs the BU Hub Council, and co-chairs the University Council’s General Education Committee. Her academic roles include affiliation with the Center for Innovation in Social Science and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program.
Education: BA in Speech Communication (University of Pittsburgh), MA in Speech Communication (University of North Carolina), PhD in Communication (Ohio State University).
Her research focuses on motherhood studies, rhetoric, and feminist theory. Notable work includes analyzing celebrity motherhood rhetoric in media, postpartum body standards, and intersections between communication and gender. She has authored award-winning books such as Bikini-Ready Moms and edited special issues like the Women’s Studies in Communication on mothering rhetorics.
Professional Recognition: Recipient of the 2016 and 2011 Outstanding Book Awards from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language & Gender. Her work has been featured in BU Today and at international conferences.
Leadership & Service: Former Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development at CGS, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning, and keynote speaker at the Mothers, Mothering, Motherhood in 21st Century conference.
