Erin J. Rand is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies at Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa (2006) and a B.A. in Psychology from Carroll College (1996). Her research focuses on queer rhetorics, LGBTQ activism, and the intersection of race, gender, and embodiment in public discourse. She has authored books and articles analyzing topics such as trans rights, Black feminist sexual justice, and queer fashion as resistance.
Her recent work includes examining the rhetoric surrounding Gavin Grimm's trans rights legal case, exploring KIMBRITIVE's advocacy for Black women's sexual agency, and analyzing queercrip fashion as political expression. She has received grants from the College of Visual and Performing Arts for her book project Minor Troubles: Racial Figurations of Youth and Queerness.
