She is currently pursuing a tax-related PhD while leading the 'Taxation in Theory and Practice' and 'Auditing' modules, where she challenges students' perceptions of tax as 'black or white' through real-world case studies and debates on concepts like 'fair tax'.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on UK tax system challenges, particularly worker classification (IR35), public sector taxation, and informal economy policy, with recent work examining small tax practitioners' operational realities through qualitative methods.
Professional recognitions include:
- Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
- Chartered Tax Adviser (Chartered Institute of Taxation)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA)
She provides doctoral supervision as evidenced by Ali Alobaid's 2024 PhD completion on Saudi audit quality, maintains regular student office hours, and serves as personal tutor. Her research is conducted through the Centre for Research into Accounting and Finance in Context (CRAFiC), where she collaborates on tax policy investigations and presents findings at national conferences including the Tax Research Network.
Dr. Burkinshaw actively bridges academic and professional practice through guest lecturer coordination and ongoing engagement with tax practitioners, maintaining current relevance in her teaching and research through continuous industry interaction.
