Lynda Burkinshaw

Lynda Burkinshaw serves as a Lecturer in Accounting & Finance at the University of Sheffield's Management School within the Accounting and Financial Management department. She joined the university in May 2012 after teaching full-time at Sheffield Hallam University since 2007, with prior professional experience as a Chartered Accountant and Tax Adviser at KPMG and a Barnsley-based tax firm.

Her educational background includes a degree in Accounting and Finance from Leeds Metropolitan University, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Teaching and Learning in Higher Education), and a Post Graduate Certificate in Research Methods (Business). She maintains active professional qualifications through ICAEW fellowship and Chartered Tax Adviser status.

Dr. Burkinshaw's research centers on tax law complexity and practitioner adaptation to extra-statutory guidance, driven by her 15+ years in tax practice. She is currently pursuing a tax-related PhD while leading the 'Taxation in Theory and Practice' and 'Auditing' modules, where she challenges students' perceptions of tax as 'black or white' through real-world case studies and debates on concepts like 'fair tax'.

Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on UK tax system challenges, particularly worker classification (IR35), public sector taxation, and informal economy policy, with recent work examining small tax practitioners' operational realities through qualitative methods.
