Lyle C. Smith III serves as Dean of the Vogel School of Engineering and Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Bryan College, where he has been instrumental in developing the engineering program since joining in 2016. His academic leadership spans both engineering and theoretical physics disciplines within the Engineering Department.
Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Louisville (2015), an M.S. in Physics from the same institution (2005), an M.S. in Mathematics from Virginia Tech (1997), a B.S. in Physics from Virginia Tech (1995), and an M.Div. in Christian Ministry from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (2005). His educational background uniquely bridges quantitative sciences and theological studies.
His research spans computational physics, numerical methods, and cosmology, with significant contributions to atomic-scale modeling and electromagnetic systems. Early career work at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center involved torpedo propulsion motor design, while recent publications focus on materials science, workforce modeling, and astrophysical simulations. His scholarly output demonstrates consistent integration of mathematical rigor with practical engineering applications.
Dr. Smith's publications reveal evolving expertise from naval engineering (1998-2000) to advanced computational physics (2015-2021), with recurring themes in numerical analysis and quantum mechanical modeling. His work bridges theoretical mathematics, practical engineering solutions, and interdisciplinary applications in demography and cosmology.
As a Christian educator, he emphasizes the integration of faith and science, particularly in his exploration of the science-religion interface. His ministerial role with college students informs his educational philosophy centered on "Expanding God's kingdom one mind at a time."
