Lydia C. Thompson is a Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and former Department Chair. She has held leadership roles including Director of the School of Art at Texas Tech University, Department Head at Mississippi State University, and roles such as Assistant Dean at Virginia Commonwealth University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has also served as Director of the Educational Opportunity Program at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
Thompson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her research focuses on ceramics, traditional architecture, and cultural studies, supported by grants such as the Fulbright Hayes Grant (Nigeria) and a residency at the International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. Her work is exhibited globally, including in the Society for Contemporary Crafts (Pennsylvania), Baltimore Clayworks, and Te Papa Tongarewa (New Zealand).
She has contributed to public art commissions, community youth programs, and served on boards for organizations like the National Council of Education for Ceramics (NCECA) and Lubbock Arts Alliance. Her professional activities include jurying exhibitions, curating, and conducting ceramic workshops internationally.
