James Connell is a Professor of Fine Arts at Winthrop University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. He specializes in ceramics and art history, with a career spanning over four decades. Connell holds an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana, a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute, and a B.A. from Loyola University.

His research focuses on ceramic artistry, functional pottery, and ceramic art history. Connell has exhibited extensively, with 24–32+ exhibitions annually between 2003–2009, and his work appears in 48 publications and eight museum collections.
He has served as a juror for major events like the NCECA Clay National Exhibitions and Strictly Functional Pottery Nationals. Notably, he received the 2004 NCECA International Residence Award.
Connell teaches ceramics at Winthrop University and has held roles such as on-site conference liaison for the 2001 Charlotte NCECA Conference.
