Wade Folger MacDonald serves as Assistant Professor of Art specializing in Ceramics within the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Appointed to this position in 2019, he has taught ceramics and studio foundations courses since 2015. A Nashville native raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan by former opera singers, MacDonald earned his BA in Art Education from Western Michigan University and his MFA in Studio Art with ceramics concentration from Michigan State University in 2014.
MacDonald's artistic practice explores the dynamic intersection of ceramics, digital fabrication, furniture design, and architecture. His work challenges traditional ceramic boundaries by incorporating contemporary technologies and interdisciplinary approaches. As a ceramic sculptor, he creates pieces ranging from functional pottery to complex sculptural installations that often integrate materials beyond clay, including wood, construction foam, vinyl, and acrylic paint.
His exhibition history reveals a clear trajectory from functional ceramics toward more conceptual installations. Recent works demonstrate sophisticated integration of digital fabrication techniques with traditional ceramic processes, exploring themes of form, function, and conceptual depth. His pieces frequently engage with Southern history and contemporary political discourse, particularly evident in works like 'Cotton: The Fabric of Our Lives' (2018).

His collaborative relationship with his wife Anne Herbert, also an artist and educator, enriches his practice through cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, MacDonald engages with the regional arts ecosystem while maintaining national and international exhibition presence. His teaching philosophy emphasizes authenticity and resilience, advising emerging artists to 'be authentic, be true to yourself, allow yourself to fail, keep going despite failure.'
