Lulin Jiang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Baylor University, College of Engineering. She holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Alabama and a BS from North China Electric Power University. Her research focuses on advanced atomization, combustion, and thermo-fluids systems, with applications in renewable energy and waste-to-energy conversion.
- PhD, Mechanical Engineering, The University of Alabama (2014)
- MS, Mechanical Engineering, The University of Alabama (2013)
- BS, Thermal Energy & Power Engineering, North China Electric Power University (2005)
Dr. Jiang's research centers on the design and optimization of next-generation combustion and atomization systems. Her team investigates flow-blurring and swirl-burst injectors to achieve ultra-fine atomization of high-viscosity biofuels such as algae oil, glycerol, and straight vegetable oil without preheating. This enables clean, stable, and near-zero-emission combustion, supporting sustainable energy solutions. She has published extensively in high-impact journals like Fuel, Experiments in Fluids, and Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science. Her work includes laser diagnostics, PIV, and shadowgraph imaging to analyze spray dynamics and combustion efficiency.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend in experimental investigation of spray formation, fuel flexibility, and emission control. Studies focus on the effects of air-to-liquid ratio, swirl number, and fuel viscosity on atomization quality and combustion performance. Keywords across her work include multiphase flow, fuel-flexible combustion, clean energy, and advanced diagnostics.
Dr. Jiang has successfully mentored both PhD and master’s students and has attracted external research funding. She has established a combustion laboratory at Baylor and previously led similar efforts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She teaches core courses including Thermodynamics and Combustion at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
She is actively involved in a waste-to-energy partnership with the City of Waco, aiming to convert local waste into clean energy using her innovative combustor technology. Her lab, the Cornerstone Atomization and Combustion Lab, is dedicated to fundamental research and workforce development in advanced energy systems.
