Luke Yates is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester, specializing in social movements, digital economies, and everyday practices. He directs the BSocSc Sociology program and co-leads Manchester’s research group on social movements and alternative futures. His work examines platform capitalism’s political tactics, prefigurative politics, and household consumption patterns.
Research focuses on corporate strategies in the platform economy (e.g., Uber/Airbnb), grassroots lobbying, and sustainable consumption. He contributes to the Sustainable Consumption Institute and collaborates across disciplines. Key awards include the Social Movement Studies Best Article Prize (2015) and a 2019 fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Sustainability.
Recent activities include organizing conferences on social movement futures and presenting at venues like Neuchatel and Geneva.
