Luke Scalone is a historian specializing in modern France and the French colonial empire in North Africa, particularly Tunisia. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Northeastern University (2020) and serves as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre d’Etudes Maghrébines à Tunis. His research challenges conventional narratives about Vichy France’s influence in Tunisia, emphasizing pre-WWII political dynamics over mere wartime legitimacy.
He teaches courses on colonialism, imperialism, and world history at Northeastern and actively engages in academic networks, including co-organizing a North Africa working group for Boston-area scholars. Scalone also contributes to H-French-Colonial as a network editor, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on colonial studies.
His work bridges multiple disciplines, analyzing interactions between French colonial administrators, Tunisian nationalist movements, Italian settlers, and far-right groups. This comparative approach illuminates broader themes in settler colonialism, global fascism, and transnational history.
