Dr. Luke Gartlan is a Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of St Andrews' School of Art History. His expertise spans modern visual practices in the global 19th century, with a focus on photography history, Japanese modern art, and cross-cultural exchanges. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and has authored influential works such as A Career of Japan, awarded the Josef Kreiner Prize. He co-edits the History of Photography journal and coordinates the MLitt History of Photography program. Current research includes Australia-Japan visual exchanges and early photography in St Andrews linked to British imperialism. He supervises three PhD candidates and has guided numerous postgraduates to completion.
Education: BA/BS and PhD in Art History, University of Melbourne. Key Projects: Investigates provinciality and empire through family photo albums, and trans-Pacific cultural flows. Grants: Funded by the Paul Mellon Centre and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Recognition: Includes a Getty Research Institute publication and residential fellowships at Yale and Nihon University.
