Lukas Folkman is a Research Fellow at Griffith University's School of Environment and Science (Environment and Marine department), affiliated with the Coastal and Marine Research Centre and Cities Research Institute. He holds a PhD from Griffith University (2015) and completed postdoctoral training at ETH Zurich and CeMM Research Center in Austria, where he developed machine learning methods for precision medicine and single-cell RNA analysis. His work focuses on applying AI to life sciences, including marine wildlife monitoring and computational biology.
Education: PhD in Computer Science from Griffith University (2011-2015). Postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich (2016-2018) and CeMM Research Center (2018-2022).
Research interests include machine learning applications in marine biology, computational biology, immunology, and precision medicine. Notable contributions include developing frameworks for underwater object detection, predicting protein stability changes, and analyzing immune responses to vaccines. He received the European Commission's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2018) for his work on single-cell RNA-seq analysis.
Advising: Currently an Associate Supervisor for a doctoral project on fish welfare in aquaculture. His research has been published in journals like Genome Biology, Immunity, and Human Genetics, with over 150 citations across his top papers.
Labs/Teams: Active in Griffith's Australian Rivers Institute, Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems, and collaborates with global institutions like CeMM and ETH Zurich.
