Luiz Felipe de Alencastro is a Professor at the School of Economics of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in São Paulo, Brazil, since 2014. He is also an Emeritus Professor at Sorbonne University (formerly Université de Paris Sorbonne) from 2014 onward. His research focuses on Slavery, Angola History, Brazil History, and South Atlantic History.
As a historian, Alencastro has held visiting professorships at institutions including the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (2012) and FGV (2011-2014). His scholarly work explores the economic and political dynamics of the Portuguese Atlantic World, the legacy of slavery in Brazil, and comparative ethnic and cultural studies in Brazil and Angola. He has been recognized with the Andrew W. Mellon Senior Researcher Fellow award at Brown University's John Carter Brown Library.
His recent publications span topics such as the South Atlantic slave trade, colonial economic networks, and postcolonial legal systems. These works reflect his interdisciplinary approach, bridging History, Economics, and Postcolonial Theory. Alencastro has also contributed to edited volumes on Brazilian political culture, musical nationalism, and the historical impact of figures like Celso Furtado.
