Luis Yanez-Guerra is a Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Neuroscience Institute for Life Sciences. His research focuses on the evolution of nervous systems in non-bilaterian animals, pharmacology of GPCRs, and neuropeptide receptor deorphanisation. He leads BBSRC-funded projects investigating neuropeptide origins in choanoflagellates and the evolutionary history of monoamine neurotransmitters. Currently supervising three PhD students in Biological Sciences, he teaches modules in Neurosciences and Pharmacology. His work bridges evolutionary biology and pharmacology, contributing to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying nervous system diversification.
- Grants: BBSRC Discovery Fellowship (2021), BBSRC International Partnering Award (2022)
- Research Themes: Early animal evolution, neuropeptide signaling, GPCR biology
- Teaching: Pharmacology, Neurosciences, Receptor Biology
Active research projects include studying neuropeptide functions in choanoflagellates and tracing neurotransmission evolution using corals as models. His collaborative work spans international partnerships, with publications in journals like eLife and Science Advances.
