Luis Viña

Luis Viña is a Full Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the Department of Physics of Materials, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he has served since 2006. He was Head of Department since 2013 and previously held roles as Professor of Condensed Matter Physics (1995-2002). His career spans institutions like the Spanish National Research Council, IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, and the Max-Planck Institut für Festkörperforschung.

• Education: Physics degree (Magna cum laude, 1979) and Ph.D. (1985) from University of Zaragoza; Ph.D. in Physics from Stuttgart University (1984)

His research focuses broadly on semiconductors, semiconductor nanostructures, magnetooptics, and spectroscopy in condensed matter physics, with specific interest in excitons, polaritons, microcavities, and coherence/condensation phenomena. He has contributed to ultrafast processes in semiconductors and quantum state engineering.

Professor Viña has served as Co-editor in Chief of the European Physics Journal of Applied Physics (2015-), as Deputy Editor for European Physics Letters (2014-), and on editorial boards for multiple journals. He has chaired international conferences including the 11th Int. Conf. on Optics of Excitons in Confined Systems (2009) and co-edited special volumes for New Journal of Physics and Semiconductor Science and Technology.

As an evaluator for over 10 national and international funding agencies, he has contributed to shaping condensed matter research agendas. He has delivered over 70 invited talks and 50 seminars globally, and supervised 12 PhD students.
