Luigi Alfano

Luigi Alfano is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Temple University's College of Science and Technology. He is affiliated with the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine and the Center for Biotechnology. His research focuses on molecular oncology, DNA repair mechanisms, and cancer therapy. Dr. Alfano holds a PhD in Molecular Oncology and Endocrinology from the University of Naples Federico II and serves as a research scientist at the National Cancer Institute 'Pascale Foundation.'

His research explores novel DNA repair proteins as therapeutic targets for cancer, particularly thyroid cancers like multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) and medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). He investigates RNA-binding proteins such as NONO and AUF-1 in DNA damage response pathways, including their roles in regulating homologous recombination and R-loop biogenesis. His postdoctoral work demonstrated NONO's role in intra-S phase checkpoint activation and UV radiation responses.
