Ludwig Ehrler (1939–2014) was a German artist, architect, and academic. He held the professorship for Artistic Fundamentals (Color/Light/Space) at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle from 1994 until his retirement in 2004. As rector (1998–2002), he led the institution through significant developments. His work blended fine arts with architectural and public space design, notably winning the Halle District Council’s Architecture Prize for the cinema 'Prisma' (1983, destroyed 1999). He received Saxony-Anhalt’s highest art honor in 1992.
Education: Studied painting at Burg Giebichenstein (1958–1965), followed by a freelance career in Halle. His research focused on color theory, spatial aesthetics, and interdisciplinary art. Major exhibitions include the GDR’s Dresden Art Exhibition (1977/78), Saxony-Anhalt’s state exhibitions (1991/94), and a posthumous retrospective in 2017 at Hallescher Kunstverein. He contributed numerous public art installations across Germany.
Key roles include collaborations with institutions like the Moritzburg State Gallery (1996) and the Burg Giebichenstein’s academic senate. His legacy is preserved through the university’s continued prominence in art and design education, with annual exhibitions and events showcasing student and alumni work aligned with his interdisciplinary ethos.
