Ludger Woessmann is a Professor of Economics at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and Director of the ifo Center for the Economics of Education in Munich. He holds a Distinguished Visiting Fellow position at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. His research focuses on the economics of education, economic growth, and labor economics, with a particular emphasis on the impact of education systems on economic prosperity and equality.
He has authored over 400 academic publications, including articles in prestigious journals like Science and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. His work has been recognized with major awards such as the Hermann Heinrich Gossen Award and the Gustav Stolper Award. Woessmann serves on multiple academic councils, including the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the International Academy of Education.
His research explores topics such as cognitive aging, regional education disparities, and the economic consequences of school closures during the pandemic. He co-edits the Handbook of the Economics of Education and organizes the annual CESifo Area Conference on the Economics of Education.
