Dr Lucy Woollett (also known as Lady Lucy) is an Associate Lecturer in Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London. She holds a practice-based PhD from Winchester School of Art (2022), an MA from Chelsea College of Arts (2008), and a BA from the University of Plymouth (1996). Her work investigates the social function of art, particularly through collaborative portraiture and gift economies. Recent projects include the permanent NHS commission Foundation of Kindness (2024) and the Herbert Butler Neighbourly Portraits (2019–2021).
Research focuses on how portraiture can foster social engagement and critique capitalist systems. Key exhibitions include works at the Whitechapel Gallery (2011), Southbank Centre (2011), and Bargehouse (2014). Collaborations include The Drawing Exchange with Kayle Brandon and community-driven projects like Portraits for Services, Gifts and Favours (Museum of London, 2017). Her practice spans paintings, drawings, and moving images, often incorporating found materials and public participation.
Her work bridges studio practice with social activism, exploring themes of collective memory, identity negotiation, and art’s role in community-building. Notable themes include art as post-capitalist exchange, facial recognition politics, and the tension between public and private identity.
