Lucy Chester is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder specializing in British imperial and anticolonial history in South Asia, with transnational focus on the Middle East and Africa. She teaches core courses including "Borderlands of Empire" and "Decolonization of the British Empire" within History and International Affairs programs.
Her academic credentials include:
- B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University
- Ph.D. from Yale University
Professor Chester's research examines British Empire dissolution through partition studies, border formation, and anticolonial resistance. Her acclaimed book Borders and Conflict in South Asia (2009) analyzes the 1947 India-Pakistan boundary, while current projects explore India-Palestine Mandate connections and Pakistan's geographical imagination. Methodologically, she integrates cartographic analysis with political history to deconstruct imperial narratives.
Recent publications reveal consistent scholarly focus on comparative partition dynamics between South Asia and Palestine, emphasizing boundary commissions' political nature, cartographic power, and obscured colonial responsibilities. Her work demonstrates rigorous archival engagement with imperial decision-making processes and their human consequences.
Research has been funded by the American Institute for Pakistan Studies, American Institute for Indian Studies, and Smith Richardson Foundation. She is currently not accepting new MA/PhD advisees.
