Lucy Cartwright is an active Researcher at Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth, with dual specializations in Mental Health & Community Engagement and Research in Deprived Coastal Communities. She has worked in health services research for both the University of Plymouth and University of Exeter since 2016, focusing on addressing health inequalities through diverse intervention projects targeting vulnerable populations.
Her research interests span mental health, community engagement, deprived coastal communities, health inequalities, and respiratory diseases. Cartwright employs a wide range of methodologies including PPIE/co-production, qualitative design (interviews, focus groups), NVivo analysis, quantitative design with SPSS, adapted Nominal Group Technique, and systematic literature reviews. Her work significantly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and wellbeing.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on qualitative approaches to understanding patient experiences in severe asthma treatment, with increasing attention to social prescribing interventions and mental health components within physical health conditions. Her work demonstrates consistent application of thematic analysis and semistructured interviewing techniques across diverse population groups.
Cartwright has successfully engaged with numerous population groups including Ugandan women, midwives and community healthcare workers; ex-offenders; adults with lung disease; diverse service users; police; mental health staff; healthcare managers; children and young people; and people with learning disabilities. Her international experience includes leading a qualitative research project in Uganda for her MSc and subsequent PPIE work focused on co-producing digital educational modules for remote and rural areas.
