Dr. Lucy Burke is Principal Lecturer in English, specializing in critical medical humanities and disability studies. Her research examines representations of dementia in literature and film, questioning how medical technologies reshape concepts of personhood. She co-founded the international Literary and Cultural Dementia Studies network and leads the AHRC-funded 'Disability and Community' project.
Burke collaborates with disability arts organizations including DadaFest and Graeae Theatre Company, creating exhibitions and film festivals. She teaches critical theory and biopolitics, supervising PhD projects on neurodiversity narratives and menstrual language politics. As external examiner for Keele University's Medical Humanities program, she shapes curriculum development nationally.
She co-chairs Manchester Met's Disabled Staff Forum and contributes to Age-Friendly Manchester initiatives.
