Lucia Carminati is a Professor of History at the University of Oslo’s Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (IAKH). Her research focuses on migration, labor, and imperial history in the modern Middle East, particularly Egypt. She specializes in the social and cultural history of the Suez Canal region, examining migrant labor, gender dynamics, and infrastructural development. Carminati holds a PhD from the University of Arizona (2018) and has taught at institutions including Texas Tech University and Durham University as a Visiting Fellow. Her work bridges global and local histories, emphasizing the lived experiences of marginalized groups in colonial contexts.
Her book *Seeking Bread and Fortune in Port Said* (2023) won major awards including the Urban History Association’s Best Book Prize and the Lyman Award for World Maritime History. It explores labor migration, urbanization, and colonial governance during the Suez Canal’s construction. Carminati’s current projects include digitizing Italian immigrant periodicals in Egypt (funded by the British Library) and editing special issues on child migrants in Middle Eastern history.
Research interests include: migration patterns, port cities, gendered labor, and decolonizing historical methodologies. She has published extensively on topics like migrant women’s agency, the intersection of technology and labor, and the historiography of the Suez Canal region.
