Luca Tenreira is a Researcher in the Department of Law at the European University Institute (EUI), where he is conducting doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Loïc Azoulai. His work is situated at the intersection of environmental law, transnational governance, and the law-science interface, with a focus on corporate due diligence in global value chains and climate change governance.
His educational background includes:
- LLM in International, Comparative and European Laws, European University Institute, Dissertation: 'Corporate Transition Policies: the troubled dreams of mandatory due diligence regulating Global Value Chains' (supervised by Prof. Loic Azoulai)
- MSc in European Law (ENS), with honors
- MSc in 'Earth Law' in Transnational Environmental Law & Political Sciences (ENS), with high honors
Luca's research interests center on the evolving legal frameworks governing ecological transitions, particularly through corporate accountability mechanisms. His work critically examines the effectiveness of mandatory due diligence laws in addressing environmental harm across global supply chains. He explores the interplay between scientific knowledge and legal regulation, drawing on anthropological and socio-legal approaches to understand the implementation and impact of environmental laws. His research also engages with Earth system law and the Anthropocene, reflecting a deep engagement with planetary-scale environmental challenges.
His recent publications analyze greenwashing practices within global value chains and critically assess the methodologies underpinning the European Green Deal. These works reflect a consistent scholarly trajectory focused on the legitimacy, efficacy, and transformative potential of environmental governance mechanisms in a transnational context.
