Lubaina Himid CBE is a Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. An alumna of the Royal College of Art (RCA), she was recently honored with an Honorary Doctorate from the RCA recognizing her ground-breaking contribution to arts and culture.
Himid has pioneered socially engaged work since the 1980s, centering Black experience and women's creativity. As a central figure in the Black Arts Movement, she has significantly influenced the recognition and representation of Black artists in British institutions through her curatorial projects and artistic practice.
Her career achievements include becoming the first black woman to win the Turner Prize in 2017, followed by a CBE in 2018 for services to art. Her current exhibition at Tate Modern showcases both recent work and career highlights, demonstrating the evolution of her artistic vision that consistently addresses historical and contemporary issues of race, gender, and social justice.
