Loïc Bertrand is a researcher at the Supramolecular and Macromolecular Photophysics and Photochemistry Laboratory (PPSM) affiliated with Université Paris-Saclay, ENS Paris-Saclay, and CNRS. He specializes in the study of ancient materials using micro-imaging techniques to reveal previously unseen secrets of heritage objects. His work bridges chemistry, physics, and heritage science, creating innovative approaches to understanding and preserving cultural artifacts through advanced analytical methods.
His educational background includes:
- Condensed-matter chemistry studies at École polytechnique (1994-1997)
- Materials engineering studies at École Mines ParisTech
- Master's Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) in materials science at École polytechnique and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (now Sorbonne Université)
- Doctorate at the Research Laboratory of the Museums of France (LRMF, now C2RMF) and ENS Paris (1999-2002)
- Post-doctorate at the Biochemistry Department at Cambridge University
- Second post-doctorate between the Solid State Physics Laboratory (Univ. Paris-Saclay, CNRS) and the SOLEIL synchrotron
Loïc Bertrand's research focuses on heritage science and the application of advanced imaging techniques to study cultural artifacts. He employs full-field micro-imaging technology and scanning techniques using synchrotron radiation to analyze the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of heritage objects. His two favorite subjects are the development of methods for studying past environments of fossilized remains and the analysis of exceptionally preserved archaeological textiles. This research provides museums and heritage institutions with valuable information about historical contexts, social practices, and ancient manufacturing techniques. He is also interested in how contemporary paintings deteriorate, particularly in relation to the transfer of collections to new conservation centers.
Loïc Bertrand established the European Photonic Institute for the Non-destructive Analysis of Ancient Materials (IPANEMA) which he managed until 2019. IPANEMA is the only laboratory for the study of heritage materials on a large instrument on an international scale. He currently manages the PPSM laboratory and is developing the subject of 'ancient and paleo-inspired materials'. He is also overseeing the establishment of the 'Collaborative Center Atoms for Heritage', a partnership between Université Paris-Saclay and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aimed at developing best practices and training programs for heritage preservation and combating illicit trafficking of heritage objects.
