Philippe Dillmann serves as a CNRS Research Director and heads the Archaeomaterials and Alteration Prediction Laboratory (LAPA) at University of Paris-Saclay, CNRS, and CEA. A pioneer in archaeometry, he bridges physical chemistry and archaeology through advanced materials analysis of historical artifacts, notably coordinating the CNRS Notre-Dame Site research initiative.
His educational foundation includes an engineering degree from Université Technologique de Compiègne (1995) and a 1998 PhD on medieval steelmaking processes, developed partly at the LURE synchrotron facility. Dillmann's research integrates human sciences with cutting-edge physical chemistry:
- Reconstructing ancient metal production through chemical/isotopic 'fingerprints' and heat treatment analysis
- Developing nanometric-scale corrosion studies for heritage conservation and nuclear waste storage prediction
- Pioneering carbon extraction from ferrous materials for radiocarbon dating in collaboration with the Carbon 14 Measurement Laboratory
- Leading interdisciplinary co-construction between archaeologists and materials scientists within his unique French research team
His awards reflect interdisciplinary excellence:

Dillmann directs the national CAI-RN archaeometric network and maintains his CEA Saclay research team since 1999, emphasizing scientific rigor in merging historical inquiry with materials innovation.
