Loyd D. Bastin is a Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of Sciences at Widener University's College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Coordinator of Undergraduate Research and leads initiatives integrating green chemistry and sustainability into academic programs. His roles include curriculum development, faculty leadership, and community engagement in environmental advocacy.
Education: PhD in Organic Chemistry (University of Washington, 2000), BA in Chemistry (University of Kentucky, 1994). He has redesigned Widener's organic chemistry curriculum to emphasize green chemistry principles and spearheaded the university's participation in Beyond Benign's Green Chemistry Commitment.
Research focuses on greener synthesis of pharmaceuticals, particularly isoxazole and maleimide derivatives, prioritizing waste reduction and energy efficiency. He actively involves undergraduates in research and advocacy projects, including political engagement through white papers and presentations to policymakers.
Key awards include the Distinguished University Professor designation (2020–2023), the inaugural Teaching Green Fellowship from the Green Chemistry Institute (2024), and multiple Widener faculty awards.
