Lovisa Sumpter is a Professor at Stockholm University's Department of Teaching and Learning, specializing in mathematics education. She began her career as an upper secondary school teacher and now leads research projects such as 'Fair Share,' which integrates mathematics with sustainability education for preschool and primary students. Her work is funded by the Swedish Institute for Educational Research. She serves on the editorial boards of Educational Studies in Mathematics and the International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education.
Her research focuses on three interconnected areas:
- Mathematical reasoning: Examining conceptual understanding and problem-solving strategies
- Affect: Investigating emotional dimensions of mathematics learning
- Gender: Analyzing participation barriers and equity in mathematics education
Recent publications (2023–2025) demonstrate a strong emphasis on ethical reasoning in mathematical modeling, affective changes in students between grade levels, and didactic interventions in early childhood education. Her work frequently employs qualitative methodologies including case studies, discourse analysis, and cross-cultural comparisons.
No awards or grants are explicitly listed. Current projects include ASSESS (Graduate School for Knowledge Assessment) and Fair Share (Mathematics for Sustainability Education).
