She serves as Program Lead for Digital Interventions and Engagement at the Matilda Centre and is a member of the Brain and Mind Centre. Her research spans multiple domains within adolescent health and digital interventions.
Dr. Thornton's primary research interests focus on eHealth, mHealth, Mental Health, Multiple Health Behaviour Change, and Science Communication. Her work specifically targets adolescents and young people, with an emphasis on leveraging digital technologies to reduce chronic disease risk and improve mental health outcomes. She leads innovative projects that bridge technology and healthcare to address critical public health challenges.
Analysis of her recent publication record reveals a strong emphasis on digital health interventions for adolescent populations, particularly examining e-cigarette use, substance abuse prevention, and multiple lifestyle risk behaviors. Her research frequently employs school-based interventions, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of digital approaches. A significant portion of her work focuses on the Health4Life initiative, which develops and implements mobile tools for chronic disease prevention among Australian adolescents.
Dr. Thornton actively contributes to mental health research leadership, having chaired the early and mid-career researcher committee for the Society for Mental Health Research (Australia's peak body for mental health research) from 2016-2022 and recently being elected as the NSW representative on the executive for the society. She has also served as a Director of the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions since 2022.
Her current research portfolio includes significant grant-funded projects such as From complexity to clarity: individual-level models for personalised youth mental health care (2025), Gambling Disorder and Comorbidity (2024), and Enhancing engagement with eHealth approaches to prevent cardiovascular disease among adolescents: The Triple E Project. She currently supervises at least one research student, Fergus LYONS, working on gambling behavior change interventions.
Dr. Thornton leads the Health4Life Initiative (https://health4life.org.au/), which has developed the Health4Life app for cardiovascular disease prevention among adolescents. Her work combines rigorous scientific methodology with practical implementation to address critical gaps in adolescent health and mental wellbeing through innovative digital solutions.
