Louise Longridge (she/her) is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia since 2005. Her academic background includes a B.Sc. in Zoology (Ecology) from UBC (1998), a Ph.D. in Paleontology from UBC (2007), and a postdoctoral fellowship in Earth and Ocean Sciences at UBC (2007–2009). Her research focuses on paleobiogeography, biostratigraphy, and the evolutionary dynamics of ammonites through mass extinction events, particularly the end-Triassic mass extinction and its aftermath. She has contributed extensively to understanding Jurassic ammonoid recovery and the geographic positioning of British Columbia’s terranes via fossil analysis.
Her teaching specialization includes undergraduate geology and paleontology courses such as EOSC 114, 116, 222, 310, 326, and 425. She prioritizes geoscience education innovation, including hybrid course development, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and accessibility strategies. Notable projects include creating 3D fossil models for online labs, alternative text (alt-text) for course figures, and extended captions to support visually impaired learners. She has collaborated with UBC Studios to digitize fragile specimens and co-led the 2025 UDL Fellows Program with Sarah Bean Sherman to enhance course accessibility.
- Research Contributions: Examined ammonite asymmetries as environmental stress adaptations, proposed sections in Haida Gwaii for Jurassic system boundary definition, and explored the Hispanic Corridor’s role in Jurassic paleogeography.
- Teaching Awards: 2024–2025 AMS UBC Universal Design for Learning Champion Award, 2022 UBC Killam Teaching Award Nominee, and 2020 Departmental Teaching Award Winner.
In UDL initiatives, Longridge emphasizes equitable access through multi-modal learning resources, including short video lectures and tactile substitutes like 3D models. She also redesigned syllabi for clarity and worked on land acknowledgments in course materials. Her current projects aim to bridge the gap between hands-on geology practices and virtual learning environments through innovative pedagogical methods.
