Louise Carter

Louise Carter is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Division of Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester and an Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Her research focuses on early-phase clinical trials of experimental cancer therapies and translational assays. She completed her medical training at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, followed by specialist training in Medical Oncology (CCT awarded 2015). Her PhD (2015) investigated genomic profiling of circulating tumour cells in small cell lung cancer, conducted under a Cancer Research UK–AstraZeneca Fellowship.

Dr. Carter’s expertise spans clinical oncology and experimental therapeutics, with contributions to biomarker-driven trials and patient-reported outcome measures. She leads initiatives to enhance early-phase trial accessibility and molecular profiling programs (e.g., TARGET National). Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). External roles include involvement in the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre’s Cancer Precision Medicine Theme (2017–2019).

Research interests include circulating tumour cells, DNA damage response pathways, and the integration of genomic data into clinical decision-making. Her articles emphasize translational research, with recent work on ATR inhibitors, patient experience measures, and biomarker optimization. Awards include the Cancer Research UK–AstraZeneca Fellowship (2012).

Grants and collaborations include the NIHR-funded Cancer Precision Medicine Theme, focusing on personalized medicine and malignant neoplasm research. Her lab and teams collaborate across institutions, advancing experimental cancer medicine and clinical trial methodologies.
