Professor Louise Beard is the Faculty Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Science and Health at the University of Essex. She holds a Professorship in Biomedical Science within the School of Life Sciences and has extensive roles including Athena Swan Lead, Senior Tutor, and Course Director for Biological Sciences and Human Biology programs. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Molecular Neurogenetics from University College London (2001) and a BSc in Biomedical Science with Molecular Biology from King’s College London (1997). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015) and recipient of prestigious teaching awards: Lecturer of the Year (2016) and Excellence in Teaching ETA Award (2016).
Her research focuses on neurogenetic disorders, particularly channelopathies such as episodic ataxia and epilepsy linked to calcium and potassium channel mutations. She has contributed to studies on genetic mutations, clinical diagnostics, and molecular mechanisms underlying neurological conditions. Her work bridges clinical and molecular perspectives, emphasizing translational research.
Professional activities include Senate membership (2018–2022) and leadership roles in curriculum development and student welfare. While publications emphasize neurogenetic research, her recent work explores educational innovations like VLE-based engagement strategies.
