Prof. Dr. Louis Sicking holds the Aemilius Papinianus Endowed Chair in History of Public International Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and serves as a University Lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern History at Leiden University. He specializes in maritime history, international law, and diplomatic practices from the medieval to early modern eras. His work bridges legal, economic, and political dimensions of pre-modern global interactions.
Education: Research Master in Overseas History (University of Aix-en-Provence, 1990s); PhD in History (Leiden University, 1996). He has held visiting fellowships at Columbia University, NTNU Trondheim, and IMF-CSIC Barcelona.
Research Focus: Maritime Conflict Management in Atlantic Europe (1200–1600), European expansion, and the institutional foundations of overseas trade. Current projects include Risk Management in Maritime Transport (VU-VUB-FWO) and Managing Markets in the Burgundian-Habsburg Low Countries.
Awards: Prix Descartes-Huygens (2017), NWO Grant (2016), and fellowships from NWO, KNAW, and Norway.
Teaching: Courses on the history of international law, medieval diplomacy, and global maritime networks. Supervises PhD candidates and organizes international conferences on maritime history and conflict resolution.
Publications: Over 30 books and articles, including Neptune and the Netherlands (2004), Colonial Borderlands (2008), and Conflict Management in the Mediterranean and Atlantic (2020). Recent work explores the Hanseatic League’s historiography and Dutch maritime dominance.
