Lou Harvey is an Associate Professor in Education at the School of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Leeds, serving as Director of Postgraduate Research Studies since joining in January 2014. Her work bridges intercultural education, arts-based research, and public pedagogy across global contexts.
Her academic qualifications include:
- PhD in Language Education (2014, University of Manchester)
- MSc in Educational Research (2010, Distinction)
- MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (2008, Distinction)
- MA (Hons) in English Language and Literature (2005, First Class)
Harvey pioneers research on learning at the intersection of language and the arts, focusing on voice and narrative in post-conflict and intercultural settings. She theorizes collaborative co-production methodologies through projects like the AHRC International Research Network Communicating the Unsayable and the Changing the Story initiative. Her work integrates drama, performance, and public engagement with institutions including The British Museum and Leeds Libraries, emphasizing decolonial approaches and migrant integration.

Harvey supervises PhD candidates in creative practice, peace education, and social justice while securing major grants from the AHRC, Arts Council, and Society for Research into Higher Education. Current projects examine arts-based civil society building in post-conflict zones and deaf inclusion in South Africa through the Youth Accountability project.
She co-founded the AILA Research Network on Creative Inquiry and Applied Linguistics and contributes to the ICY: Inclusion, Childhood & Youth Research Centre, maintaining active partnerships with international cultural organizations.
