Lotte Meurkens (R.C.) is an Assistant Professor of Private Law at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law. She holds master’s degrees in European Law and Dutch Private Law from Maastricht University, where she also completed her PhD on punitive damages in 2014. Her research focuses on Dutch Law of Obligations, punitive damages, and civil liability frameworks, with notable contributions to private international law and intellectual property law. She has extensive teaching experience, coordinating courses like Contract Law and supervising thesis/internship students. Previously, she served as a deputy judge at Limburg District Court (2017–2021) and is currently Vice-Chair of Maastricht University’s Board of Appeal for Examinations. Her work bridges legal theory and practice, emphasizing problem-solving and judgment analysis.

Publications reflect trends towards transnational legal harmonization and practical implications of liability doctrines. Her 2023 edited volume on punitive damages enforcement highlights global legal challenges. Recent work explores Belgian vs Dutch liability principles in comparative law contexts.
Advising and Research: Supervises bachelor/master theses and internship students. Coordinated major research projects like the tROM-project on chromium-6 exposure liability in collaboration with RIVM. Active in faculty governance as BSA-/MOMI committee member since 2023.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on environmental liability and IP law projects at Maastricht Law School.
