Lothar Goetz serves as Reader in Fine Art at the University of Sunderland, teaching on the BA (Hons) Fine Art and MA Visual Practice programs. His artistic practice spans drawing, painting, wall paintings, and site-specific installations with a specific focus on space, color, and form.
Goetz explores how color interferes with spatial perception through projects in diverse settings including Piccadilly Underground Station, Haymarket Metro Station, The Ministry of Justice, Pallant House, and Leeds Art Gallery. His research examines Modernism's language and inventions and their impact on current aesthetics through cross-disciplinary approaches connecting art, architecture, drama, textiles, and design.
His exhibition history reveals consistent engagement with both national and international venues, including solo shows at Chisenhale (London), The Collection Lincoln, Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, and Kunstverein/Künstlerhaus Hanover. Recent group exhibitions include Seurat to Riley: The Art of Perception (Compton Verney), Enter Stage Left (The Glucksman Gallery), and Drama Queen (Museum Morsbroich).
Goetz's artistic output demonstrates a sustained investigation into color theory, spatial relationships, and public art interventions. His work appears in 138 documented publications ranging from exhibition catalogues to research portfolios exploring immersive wall paintings as a methodology for understanding how color and abstraction affect social space perception.
Notable projects include permanent commissions for Canary Wharf (Pride Month installations), Leeds Art Gallery (Xanadu), and Rome's Arte in Nuvola. His practice bridges gallery contexts with public realm interventions, consistently examining color's perceptual and psychological dimensions.
