Dr. Lorraine Boran is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Dublin City University (DCU), based in the School of Psychology within the Faculty of Science and Health. She lectures on Law and Neuroscience, Cognitive Technologies, and Social Robotics, and currently serves as Programme Coordinator of the BSc in Psychology and Disruptive Technologies (BPDT). Previously, she held the role of Teaching Convenor for the School of Psychology (2019-2024) and Programme Coordinator for the BSc Psychology programme (2016-2018).
Her academic training spans psychology at Trinity College Dublin and legal studies at Kings Inns, University of West of England, and DCU. Her research focuses on cognitive assessment, enhancement, and rehabilitation; neuroethics; mental health law; and prehabilitation in cancer care. Notable projects include studies on cognitive function in the elderly, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, dyslexia, and pediatric pain management, as well as innovative applications of serious games in cognitive interventions.
Awarded the DCU President’s Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award (2013-2014), Dr. Boran has also chaired DCU’s Research Ethics Advisory Committee (2013-2015). Her interdisciplinary work bridges psychology, law, and technology, with recent emphases on neuroethical implications of emerging cognitive technologies and legal frameworks surrounding neuroscience applications.
