Shirley Coyle is an Assistant Professor in the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University (DCU) and serves as Programme Chair for DCU’s BSc Global Challenges programme.
Her educational background includes:
- BEng in Electronic Engineering from DCU (2000)
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering from NUI Maynooth (2005)
- Diploma in Fashion Design from the Grafton Academy (2001-2008)
- Postgraduate studies in Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Innovation from UCD’s Innovation Academy (2017)
Her research integrates Biomedical Engineering and Fashion Design, with core interests in smart garments, wearable sensors, and sustainable textiles. Shirley pioneered the first wearable chemical sensors during her tenure at DCU’s National Centre for Sensor Research (2005-2015) and served as Research Fellow and Team Leader for Wearable Sensors at the INSIGHT Centre for Data Analytics, including a term on its Governing Authority (2011-2015). She founded a wearable technology consultancy (2018-2019) following postgraduate studies in entrepreneurship.
