Professor Lorna Montgomery is a faculty member at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work. Her academic career spans over a decade, with a focus on adult safeguarding, mental health, and cross-cultural social work practices. She has held leadership roles including Programme Director for the Bachelor of Social Work undergraduate program and Director of Practice Learning. Her research emphasizes co-production methodologies, particularly in Uganda, exploring issues like elder abuse, bereavement, and culturally competent interventions.
Montgomery’s professional background includes 20 years as a social worker in mental health, adult safeguarding, and NGO work in Uganda. She has led or contributed to 10+ research projects, including the ‘MED-AGE’ interdisciplinary program and trauma-informed practice initiatives. Her teaching spans social work skills, therapeutic interventions, and mental health pathways at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Key research interests include adult safeguarding policies, welfare inequalities, and institutional abuse in Northern Ireland. She has published widely on topics such as care transitions for older adults, caregiver burden in Uganda, and the implementation of trauma-informed approaches. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, education, and inequality reduction.
