Professor Lorna McGregor is Director of the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project and Deputy Dean (External Relations) at Essex Law School, University of Essex. Her research examines international human rights law's intersection with emerging technologies, detention frameworks, and transitional justice mechanisms.
Research focuses on:
- Human rights implications of AI and big data
- Legal frameworks for detention and alternatives
- Access to justice and remedy systems
- Human rights within public international law
Her monograph 'Detention and its Alternatives under International Law' (OUP 2023) establishes foundational principles for detention regulation. McGregor has led major research initiatives including the £4.7M ESRC-funded Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project and a Newton Senior Fellowship on human rights' effects on international law.
Professional contributions include:
- Commissioner of the British Equality and Human Rights Commission
- Co-chair of expert group revising UN Standard Minimum Rules for Prisoners
- Trustee of the AIRE Centre
